Abraham is instructed by God to present his only son, Isaac, as a living sacrifice to demonstrate Abraham's obedience. Abraham tells Isaac that they are going to Moriah to make a sacrifice, carrying the wood for the fire along with them. Isaac asks, "I see the wood for the fire, but where is the lamb for the sacrifice." Abraham answered, "God will provide that." When they arrived at Moriah, Abraham bound Isaac and laid him on the altar." An angel of the Lord called out to Abraham, "Do not lay a hand on that boy. Now that I see you wouldn't withhold your only son, I know that you fear God." Abraham called the place Jehovah-Jireh which means "On the mountain of the Lord it shall be provided". Abraham's near sacrifice of his only son foreshadows God's sacrifice of His only son, Jesus. The name Jehovah-Jireh is used for God to remind us that He will provide all we need and more than we can imagine.
